Reed-Union Corporation began in 1929 as a specialty chemical coatings manufacturer in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. One of the many company brand names, Nu Enamel, was a leading consumer paint brand famous for taking an old surface and restoring it to look like new. In 1969, the coatings division was sold to one of the largest paint manufacturers in the world. The following year, Nu Vinyl was introduced as a one-step, no buffing product to be applied to vinyl car tops and all vinyl and rubber surfaces. Several years later, another car care product was developed by Reed-Union as a replacement for carnauba wax and it was extensively tested to create a more durable car polish. The test results led to the creation of Nu Finish, The Once-A-Year Car Polish, which restores a showroom shine even to junkyard cars. Nu Finish is a pioneer in the use of amino-functional chemicals, revolutionizing the car care appearance industry with the utilization of zinc cross-linking technology.
Although car appearance products rarely experience a strong loyal following, Nu Finish quickly gained market share as satisfied customers would tell neighbors and friends of the excellent results. Soon after, Consumer Reports Magazine discovered Nu Finish, leading to three consecutive top ratings for such benefits as quality, durability, gloss improvement and best retail value. And, for over 35 years, Reed-Union has supported its line of car care products by becoming the largest buyer of television advertising time in its category.
